In Asian trading on Monday, November Brazilian-real futures fell about 10%, while the Tokyo-listed Nomura NF Ibovespa Link ETF slumped roughly 15%. These early overseas moves preceded Brazil’s local trading session.
An Election Trade Begins to Unwind
Before the runoff, Brazilian stocks had closed Friday almost 7% above their pre-first-round level, while the real was nearly 5% stronger against the U.S. dollar. Investors had positioned for a change of government and tighter public finances.
That positioning helps explain the speed of the reaction. When an anticipated policy shift fails to materialize, investors may reduce exposure before the reelected administration has announced new economic measures.
The Tokyo ETF tracks the Ibovespa index converted into yen. Its price therefore reflects currency movements alongside equity expectations, making it an imperfect guide to the eventual move in Brazil’s domestic stock index.
Fiscal Credibility Becomes the Key Test
Brazil’s public debt already exceeds 82% of GDP, while pensions and other mandatory spending restrict the scope for cuts. The challenge is to stabilize debt while maintaining social programmes and investment.
If investors doubt that debt can be contained, they may demand greater compensation for holding government bonds. Higher borrowing costs can then weigh on public finances, business investment, and equity valuations.
Lula will also face a Congress with strong support for Bolsonaro’s political camp. The prospects for fiscal measures will depend on negotiations and legislative backing, alongside the government’s stated intentions.
What Could Stabilize Brazilian Assets?
The choice of finance minister and the final 2027 budget will provide early signals. Investors will assess whether spending commitments are matched by credible measures to contain debt.
Political uncertainty adds another influence. Bolsonaro has refused to concede and said he would seek to annul the result. Markets will watch how the challenge develops following the electoral court’s declaration of Lula’s victory.
Clearer fiscal plans and evidence that they can pass Congress could help reduce the premium investors demand for Brazilian assets. Conversely, commitments that raise spending without credible funding could deepen pressure on the currency and bonds.
For traders, the domestic session will be an important test of the overseas reaction. The direction of the real, local stocks, and interest-rate futures will help establish whether the initial repricing broadens or begins to stabilize.
