Del:
Financial markets shifted sharply following weaker-than-expected US non-farm payrolls data, prompting investors to reassess the monetary policy outlook. Attention now turns to a packed economic calendar, with US CPI, PPI and retail sales data all due over the next three days.

Among these reports, the July Consumer Price Index is anticipated to be the week’s primary event and could lead to increased volatility across global markets.

July US CPI Inflation Preview

The Consumer Price Index is one of the most closely watched US economic indicators because of its potential to shape interest-rate expectations and influence currencies, equities, bonds and precious metals.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release July CPI data on Wednesday. Markets expect headline inflation to rise by approximately 0.1% month over month, while the annual rate is forecast to ease from 3.5% to around 3.4%. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, is expected to increase by 0.2% on the month and 2.5% year over year..

Market Positioning Ahead of US CPI Data

Forex markets, US equity indices, and precious metals have entered a consolidation phase as investors await the inflation report. Gold extended its recovery to a new monthly high of $4,435 on Tuesday before relinquishing some gains. It has since traded within a narrow range amid subdued volume and a lack of significant economic catalysts.

The euro and British pound reached fresh multi-week highs against the US dollar earlier in the week, supported by broad-based weakness in the US currency. Both currency pairs have since consolidated as the dollar staged a modest recovery. The US dollar strengthened modestly against a basket of major currencies, benefiting both from caution ahead of the CPI report and renewed demand for safe-haven assets. Meanwhile, Bitcoin has fallen below $64,000 amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and uncertainty regarding the inflation outlook, which continue to weigh on risk appetite.

Bottom Line

Recent weaknesses in the U.S. labor market have led investors to moderate their expectations regarding further interest rate hikes. Nonetheless, Federal Reserve officials continue to emphasize that inflation remains their primary concern, despite indications of slower employment growth. The upcoming July Consumer Price Index (CPI) report will be crucial in shaping market expectations for the Fed’s next policy move.

Currently, interest rate markets are nearly evenly split on whether the Federal Reserve will implement a rate increase in September. A stronger-than-anticipated inflation reading could reinforce expectations that the Fed will maintain higher interest rates for an extended period—or potentially consider an additional hike. Conversely, a softer inflation report would likely reduce the likelihood of further tightening and strengthen calls for a more accommodative monetary policy stance.
