Semiconductor stocks led the decline, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropping 12.2%. Nvidia lost 9.3%, while AMD fell approximately 17.3%, as selling spread across chipmakers, cloud infrastructure providers and other AI-related businesses.
Why AI Infrastructure Is Facing New Pressure
The selloff followed the Democrats' sweeping victory in the U.S. midterm elections, which raised concerns about tighter restrictions on data-center development. Candidates opposing further expansion won important races, while numerous local ballot measures reflected growing resistance to large infrastructure projects.
The implications extend beyond data-center operators. Building AI facilities requires substantial investment in processors, memory, networking equipment, electricity and cooling systems. If regulatory approvals become more difficult or construction projects are delayed, suppliers could experience slower order growth even if long-term demand for computing capacity remains strong.
The semiconductor sector also faced company-specific pressure. Qualcomm shares declined 9.5% after smartphone chip sales missed expectations, adding to concerns about demand conditions outside the AI infrastructure market.
Financing Costs Could Amplify the Slowdown
The recent expansion of AI infrastructure has required considerable capital, with technology companies increasingly relying on debt financing to support construction. Elevated borrowing costs make these projects more expensive, particularly when significant spending occurs years before the expected revenue is fully realized.
This creates a risk that extends beyond potential regulatory delays. Slower construction would postpone the deployment of computing capacity and could push back the revenue expected to justify current investment commitments. For highly leveraged companies, such delays may also increase pressure on cash flow and refinancing requirements.
Nevertheless, investment activity has not stopped. Google announced plans for a $17 billion data center in Wyoming, illustrating that major technology companies continue committing capital despite growing uncertainty. The distinction between financially stronger operators and businesses dependent on external funding may therefore become increasingly important.
What Could Determine Whether the Correction Deepens?
The Nasdaq's decline contrasts with the continued expansion of AI investment, suggesting investors are reassessing the timing and profitability of future growth rather than abandoning expectations for the technology altogether.
Government bond markets offered a potential counterweight. The yield on ten-year U.S. Treasuries declined to approximately 4.84% on Thursday, reflecting increased demand for bonds. Persistently lower yields could eventually ease financing costs and support equity valuations, although they would not eliminate construction or profitability risks.
Attention now turns to Friday's U.S. employment report, alongside upcoming corporate earnings and developments in data-center regulation. These factors will help determine whether the decline reflects a temporary adjustment in valuations or a more fundamental reassessment of the AI investment cycle.
For investors, the central issue is no longer simply how much companies are willing to spend on artificial intelligence. Increasingly, it is whether those investments can be completed on schedule and generate sufficient returns to justify their financing costs.
