As July draws to a close, markets are operating under a "siege mentality" due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. As we approach the crucial trading day of the week, significant market movements are expected ahead of the July Federal Reserve interest rate decision—an event likely to shape the direction of global financial markets. Investors should brace for volatility, closely monitoring the Fed’s guidance on future policy moves.

All eyes on Chair Kevin Warsh's message

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) concludes its two-day meeting on Wednesday, with the consensus expectation that interest rates will remain unchanged—steady since January. The Federal Reserve will announce its decision at 18:00 GMT, followed by Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference at 18:30 GMT. Market pricing currently reflects a 35.8% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike, while the likelihood of rates remaining steady between 3.50% and 3.75% stands at 64.2%.

The focal point for traders is Chair Warsh’s commentary, as this meeting will not feature new economic projections. Investors will be paying close attention to his comments on inflation and the outlook for future rate hikes, as market pricing shows that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates in September by 76%. Warsh will also be questioned on future easing amid fresh pressure from the White House to lower interest rates. A hawkish tone might increase market volatility, while dovish signals could boost risk asset momentum.

How are the markets preparing for the Fed decision?

Global markets have experienced notable volatility throughout the week, a trend expected to intensify with today’s Fed announcement and escalating tensions in the Middle East. The US dollar remains strong, maintaining upward momentum. Precious metals such as gold and silver are trading within a descending wedge below key moving averages, with bearish sentiment prevailing. Bitcoin has struggled to sustain recent gains and currently trades near the lower end of its recent range, indicating cautious market sentiment as traders await the next directional cue. Meanwhile, major US indices are falling as traders seek profits ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting, and tensions in the Middle East are rising once more.
