Wall Street entered Tuesday with fresh momentum after the Nasdaq Composite closed at a record high on Monday, lifted by gains in heavyweight technology stocks. Easing oil prices offered some relief from inflation concerns, although elevated Treasury yields continued to pose a challenge to the rally.

Technology Stocks Lead Gains

Nvidia rose 2.1% on Monday, while Microsoft gained 1.5%. Meta Platforms and Tesla each advanced around 2%, underscoring investor confidence in major technology companies and the earnings potential of artificial intelligence.

The Nasdaq’s strong performance suggests investors remain willing to pay a premium for companies with promising growth prospects. But the market’s reliance on its largest technology stocks raises a question about the rally’s durability: can those gains spread to other sectors?

SpaceX shares gained approximately 7.6% on Monday. Separately, the company is seeking regulatory approval for a natural gas pipeline in Florida to support its launch operations at Cape Canaveral.

Falling Oil Prices Offer Relief

Oil prices fell below $100 a barrel heading into Tuesday, easing some inflation concerns and providing a more supportive backdrop for equities.

For technology stocks, the potential benefit is indirect. Sustained declines in energy prices could temper inflation and reduce pressure for further monetary tightening, supporting companies whose valuations depend heavily on future earnings.

Higher Bond Yields Remain a Headwind

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield reached approximately 5.31% on Monday, highlighting the borrowing-cost pressures accompanying the market’s advance.

Higher yields can weigh on equities by raising financing costs and making fixed-income investments more competitive. Technology stocks can be particularly sensitive because higher discount rates reduce the present value of expected future earnings.

What Could Determine the Rally’s Next Stage

The Nasdaq’s record close puts three developments in focus: whether AI-related earnings meet expectations, whether oil prices continue to ease and whether Treasury yields stabilise.

Broader market participation would also help sustain the rally. Gains across more sectors would reduce dependence on a small group of influential technology companies.

Investors will also watch Wednesday’s release of minutes from the Federal Reserve’s previous meeting for insight into policymakers’ views on inflation, employment and the outlook for interest rates.

For now, market momentum remains favourable. Whether it lasts will depend on corporate earnings and economic data continuing to support investor confidence.
