The reading puts inflation further above the Bank of England’s 2% target ahead of its November 5 meeting. Investors had already been expecting a quarter-point increase in Bank Rate to 4%, leaving attention on the potential path beyond that decision.
Fuel Costs Lead the Rise
The Office for National Statistics identified transport, particularly motor fuels, as the largest upward contributor to the increase in annual inflation. Restaurants and hotels provided the largest partial offset.
Core inflation, which excludes energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco, rose to 2.8% from 2.6%. Annual services inflation also increased, reaching 3.7% compared with 3.4% in August.
Services prices were flat on the month. Airfares fell less sharply than a year earlier, helping lift the annual services rate through the comparison with September 2025. That makes the composition of the increase significant when assessing persistence.
Policy Depends on Inflation Persistence
The Bank of England held Bank Rate at 3.75% in September, with three of its nine policymakers preferring an increase to 4%. The committee highlighted the risk that prolonged energy pressures could influence wage and price-setting.
Higher energy costs can generate continuing inflation if businesses repeatedly pass on higher bills and workers seek pay increases to protect spending power. Policymakers will assess whether these effects become established across the economy.
Monetary tightening works mainly by restraining spending and credit demand. The Bank must judge whether inflation risks justify that drag on an economy already facing higher energy costs.
What Could Move Sterling Next?
The next CPI report is scheduled for November 18, after the Bank’s November decision. Business surveys, policymakers’ comments, and changes in energy prices could therefore influence expectations before policymakers vote.
Evidence of persistent underlying inflation could support sterling if investors raise their expectations for UK interest rates relative to those elsewhere. A longer period of restrictive policy could matter more than confirmation of an anticipated initial increase.
Conversely, weaker activity or easing energy costs could limit expectations for further tightening. Higher headline inflation would then offer less support to the currency if markets became more concerned about the growth outlook.
For traders, the key test is whether the inflation surprise changes expectations beyond a widely anticipated November increase. Sterling’s next sustained move will depend on how that shift compares with policy expectations in other economies.
