ASML Posts Record Sales and Lifts Its Outlook

ASML reports record sales and a stronger outlook as customers expand their AI investment plans. The immediate question is whether the company can turn rising equipment demand into sustained earnings growth while increasing production capacity.

ASML reported record third-quarter net sales of €11.7 billion on Wednesday, October 14, up about 55% from a year earlier. Net income reached €4.96 billion, while the gross margin increased to 57.5%.

The company also raised the lower end of its 2026 sales outlook to €44 billion from €43 billion, keeping the upper end at €45 billion. For investors, the central question is how far stronger demand can extend growth beyond this year.

Higher Margins Strengthen the Quarter

Installed Base Management sales, which include services and upgrades, reached €3.3 billion. ASML said stronger demand for productivity upgrades helped lift the gross margin above its guidance.

Upgrades allow customers to improve production using equipment already installed. For investors, the key issue is whether this source of revenue can help sustain margins as ASML increases deliveries of new systems.

Reported profit also benefited from roughly €500 million related to revaluing ASML’s investment in Mistral AI. This gain should be assessed separately from operating performance. Operating income reached €5.17 billion, more than double the year-earlier level.

AI Demand Tests Planned Production Capacity

CEO Christophe Fouquet said customers continue to raise their equipment demand forecasts, primarily because of AI investment plans. Some have expressed interest in placing orders for 2029 and even 2030.

ASML expects its currently planned supply for 2027 and 2028 to fall short of customers’ demand. It is exploring ways to expand 2028 capacity beyond the additional 30% increase previously discussed for that year.

Converting those forecasts into revenue will require firm orders and timely deliveries. The pace of capacity expansion and its cost will therefore matter for future profitability.

What Could Sustain Confidence After the Results?

ASML expects fourth-quarter sales of €14.2 billion to €15.2 billion, with a gross margin around 57%. That outlook shifts attention to whether the company can maintain its delivery momentum through year-end.

Timely shipments and resilient margins could support expectations for further earnings growth. Conversely, delayed customer projects or higher expansion costs could limit how much stronger demand contributes to profit.

The results also need to be interpreted within the wider AI investment cycle. Strong equipment demand does not establish whether every data-centre project can generate adequate returns, particularly if financing remains expensive.

The stock’s next sustained move will hinge on whether new information raises expectations for earnings beyond 2026. Strong demand can support that case, while execution will determine how much of the opportunity translates into profitable growth.
