Hot PPI Fuels Fed Rate Hike Bets: Countdown to CPI Release

Surging producer prices and higher crude oil costs have pushed the probability of a September rate increase to roughly 70%, leaving the dollar, bonds, equities, gold, and Bitcoin poised for a volatile reaction to Friday’s inflation report.

Markets are entering the final trading session of the week on edge after a hotter-than-expected Producer Price Index reignited concerns that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates at its September 15–16 policy meeting.

The August PPI report showed that U.S. wholesale inflation accelerated as the war in Iran drove energy prices higher. Producer prices increased 0.4% month over month and 5.4% year over year, adding to fears that rising input costs could eventually feed through to consumer prices.

Investors reacted swiftly. Traders raised the implied probability of a September Fed rate increase to approximately 70%, while risk assets and precious metals came under selling pressure. The report also supported the U.S. dollar and reinforced expectations that interest rates could remain higher for longer.

CPI Becomes the Decisive Test

Attention now shifts to the August Consumer Price Index, scheduled for release at 12:30 UTC on Friday. The report will be one of the Federal Reserve’s most important data points before next week’s policy decision.

Headline inflation is forecast to rise 0.4% month over month and 3.4% year over year. Core CPI—which excludes volatile food and energy prices—is expected to increase 0.2% from July, matching the previous month’s gain.

On an annual basis, core inflation is projected to slow to 2.4%, which would represent its lowest reading since March 2021. Such an outcome could reassure policymakers that underlying price pressures are continuing to ease, even as energy-driven headline inflation remains elevated.

Implications of a Hotter-than-Expected CPI

An above-forecast inflation reading would strengthen the case for a September rate increase and could trigger another sharp repricing across global markets.

The U.S. dollar and Treasury yields would likely move higher as investors price in tighter monetary policy. At the same time, equities, gold, and Bitcoin could face renewed selling pressure as higher borrowing costs reduce the appeal of risk-sensitive and non-yielding assets.

A particularly strong core CPI reading could have an even greater impact because it would suggest that inflationary pressure extends beyond the recent surge in energy prices.

Could a Softer Report Calm the Markets?

A weaker-than-expected CPI print would offer investors some relief. Evidence of moderating inflation could reverse part of this week’s tightening in financial conditions and give the Federal Reserve greater scope to leave rates unchanged.

Such a result could weigh on the dollar and Treasury yields while supporting equities, precious metals, and cryptocurrencies. However, the size of the reaction would depend on whether weakness appears across both headline and core inflation.

The Bottom Line

Friday’s CPI report is poised to be a pivotal market event. Following the strong PPI reading that solidified expectations of another rate hike, consumer inflation data will determine whether this sentiment intensifies or recedes.

With the Federal Reserve’s September meeting imminent, even minor deviations from forecasts could provoke outsized market reactions. Investors should prepare for increased volatility as markets seek clear signals on the Fed’s next policy direction.
